If you are a singer or vocalist, no matter whether just starting out or a seasoned professional, you no doubt will continue learning new methods for improving your singing voice.

But are there proper and improper ways of handing things related to your singing talent? Of course a clear, unobstructed vocal cord is the best way to go. Here is a simple tip; clear your throat correctly. But how do you do it right, without damaging your voice?

Brett Manning, world renowned vocal expert and teacher, recommends a "whisper cough" or a weak cough. This type of cough is the one you use in the library when you have a slight cold and don't want to disturb anybody. This is a cough without tone and you should not feel any irritation or strain on your throat. Some say you can re-swallow your mucus, I suggest you spit it out (obviously into the proper receptacle).

The Lemon Connection

Hitting the high notes and all the scales isn't easy even for a true veteran vocalist. But singing with authority can be much easier when you know what to do. If you are still having trouble clearing your throat, Manning suggests mixing slices of lemon in water (lemon juice extract might also be a viable option). Sip this slowly for 20 minutes to see a reduction in mucus production.

If you have an audition that day and are going to be showing your top performance, Manning says to avoid dairy completely. You don't want your audience to hear clearing throat seconds before, or even during your performance.

Exceptions

If you are trying out for the karaoke world finals, I might say that a scratchy sounding voice could be to your advantage, especially if singing that old time rock 'n roll (just kidding).

Use Breathing Techniques

Along with clearing your throat and maintaining mucus levels properly comes your breathing techniques. If you don't know how to breathe, you will not be able to manage your voice, and will find yourself short of breath in no time.

Practice breathing in and out deeply, exhaling all carbon dioxide from your lungs. Then inhale as much as you can, without letting your diaphragm expand outward. This forces more air into your lungs and thus, makes them stronger and healthier.

Remember, make sure to breath slowly, steadily, and consistently and to not take short, quick and shallow breaths. In through the nose with your mouth closed to add moisture. This also helps to make mucus more manageable when clearing your throat.
